Health is a top priority for Gen Z and Millennials

Family ranks second among the "ultimate wishes" ©APA/THEMENBILD
The greatest wish of 20 to 37 year olds is mental and physical health. This is the result of the study "International Research on the Health Status of Young Europeans" by the pharmaceutical company Merck. In the course of the survey, 9,329 people were interviewed, 630 of them from Austria. 12.7 percent of Austrian women and 14.6 percent of Austrian men also said they wanted to overcome the climate crisis.
The respondents named the "economic situation" and their "pay and working conditions" as the most important factors in terms of their emotional state. These two factors were mentioned most frequently both in Austria and globally. In Austria, 43.5 percent of respondents were worried about the "economic situation", while the global figure was 53.9 percent. The Austrian interviewees were also 5.7 percentage points below the global figure for the factor "pay and working conditions" at 42.7 percent.
Own family in second place of the "ultimate wishes"
15.8 percent of Austrian women and 12.7 percent of Austrian men want a family and children - this attitude is therefore in second place among the "ultimate wishes". The desire to overcome the climate catastrophe is higher among Austria's Gen Z, i.e. 20 to 26 year olds, at 16.9 percent, than the 11.9 percent of Millennials, who are between 27 and 37 years old. 44 percent of Austrian women and 36.3 percent of Austrian men often or very often feel physically unwell. There are clear gender differences in Austria when it comes to the frequency of emotional discomfort: 42.2 percent of men and 63 percent of women report this.
Austrian respondents see more support and tangible programs for caregivers as the most important possible change in the healthcare system. Internationally, survey participants want equal access to innovative treatment strategies. Both Generation Z and Millennial respondents express skepticism about the use of AI in making diagnoses.
Effects of social media are viewed negatively
The effects of social media are clearly assessed as negative. 56 percent of Austrians surveyed see mistrust as a result of fake news as a result of consuming social media. A clear difference in the effects of social media is revealed in terms of the feeling of inadequacy, for example in relation to one's own appearance, achievements or lifestyle. 52.2 percent of women and 41.2 percent of men selected this effect as one of the answer options.
