An extraordinary piece of space history will soon go under the hammer: Sotheby's in New York announces the auction of the largest known Martian meteorite on Earth. The meteorite, dubbed "NWA 16788," weighs an impressive 25 kilograms and is scheduled to be auctioned on July 16, 2025.

According to Sotheby's, the piece of rock was discovered in Niger in 2023. Researchers suspect that it was hurled into space by a violent asteroid impact on Mars and eventually landed on Earth. Such Martian meteorites are extremely rare—only around 400 examples are known worldwide, many of which weigh only a few grams.
According to the auction house, the value of the piece could reach up to four million US dollars – the equivalent of approximately 3.7 million euros. Due to its size and rarity, the meteorite is considered particularly valuable both scientifically and economically.
