UN Security Council votes on sanctions against Iran

In the nuclear dispute with Iran, the UN Security Council could take another step toward reinstating sanctions against Tehran on Friday in New York. The United Nations' most powerful body is scheduled to meet at 4:00 p.m. CEST to vote on a corresponding draft resolution. If this text, maintaining the lifting of sanctions, is not adopted, the UN sanctions would automatically reapply starting at the end of next week.
Diplomats expect the draft to be rejected as planned. To be passed, the draft would need nine votes in the 15-member Council, and none of the five veto powers (the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, and China) would be able to veto it. These UN sanctions were already in force from 2006 to 2010.
"Snapback mechanism" launched at the end of August
Germany, Great Britain and France initiated this so-called snapback mechanism at the end of August because they believe Iran is fundamentally violating the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, for example by enriching uranium far beyond the levels necessary for civilian purposes.
Even if the resolution is rejected, the signatory states—Germany, Great Britain, and France—would still have until the end of next week to negotiate concessions with Iran that could prevent the sanctions. Currently, however, diplomats consider this unlikely. Starting Tuesday, around 150 heads of state and government will gather in New York for the UN General Assembly debate.
