CIRED 2025 | Huawei introduces new IDS capabilities to digitally enable future distribution networks

Geneva (ots/PRNewswire) - From June 16 to 19, 2025, Huawei showcased the latest features of its Intelligent Distribution Solution (IDS) at this year's Congrés International des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution (CIRED 2025). As one of the most influential communication platforms in the field of global energy distribution, CIRED 2025 attracted 129 companies, 2,654 industry experts, and attendees from 72 countries to network and participate in technical workshops. During the event, Huawei announced new features for the IDS and showcased its latest achievements in global digital distribution, aiming to digitally enable future distribution networks. In recent years, power distribution networks around the world have faced challenges such as frequent power outages, low grid resilience, aging infrastructure, and limited renewable energy utilization. In addition, the adoption of distributed photovoltaics and electric vehicle charging stations is rapidly increasing. Traditional power grid operation and maintenance are under enormous pressure. To solve these problems, Huawei's IDS leverages the "Cloud-Pipe-Edge-Pipe-Device" architecture and integrates ICTs such as the High-Speed ​​Power Line Carrier (HPLC) and the Edge Computing Unit (ECU), enabling transparent detection and proactive operation and maintenance activities. This enables customers to shorten fault response times, enhance the resilience of the distribution grid to extreme natural events, and improve user satisfaction. To date, the IDS has been widely deployed in China and piloted by more than 20 power utilities around the world. In the Asia-Pacific region, the IDS has helped reduce the power outage detection time to two minutes or less and reduce the number of line outages by approximately 20%.

During the exhibition, Huawei unveiled a customized new IDS feature designed to solve the problem of invisible, unmeasurable, and uncontrollable devices and environments in the power distribution room. Using AI and IoT sensing, it will build an all-weather environmental sensing network for power distribution rooms, providing 24/7 real-time alerts. With AI's efficient data processing and real-time responsiveness, it can provide timely warnings of environmental risks and perform preventive maintenance for equipment, transforming passive management into proactive management. This helps customers manage the impact of extreme weather events on power supplies, increasing power reliability while extending equipment lifespan.

During CIRED 2025, Huawei hosted the IDS Rump Session with the support of the IET to share its practical experiences in collaborating with partners and supporting customers in the digital and intelligent transformation of distribution grids. As a long-standing supporter of international standards in the field of power distribution, Huawei participated in the 5th session of the IEEE P 2413.2 Working Group. The goal was to promote the standardization and international development of the power industry, advance the construction of distribution communication networks, and solve the two global technical problems of medium-voltage backhaul and 400V low-voltage transparency.
