In extreme heat: IG BAU union demands short-time work benefits

When the sun beats down on the streets in midsummer, most people seek refuge. However, this isn't so easy on construction sites in this country. Those who work there need better protection, says the industrial union IG BAU.
"At these temperatures, working outside under the scorching sun and, for example, on hot asphalt is a major challenge," said Federal Chairman Robert Feiger to the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND). "Over an extended period, drinking plenty of fluids, taking longer breaks, sunscreen, and similar measures are no longer sufficient. That's why we're calling for climate short-time work benefits, similar to the seasonal short-time work benefits we already have for the winter."
Feiger explains how it works: If, for example, it gets too cold or snow prevents work, work is suspended, and employees receive 60 percent of their net income plus supplementary benefits from the Federal Employment Agency. Those with at least one child receive 67 percent.
The union representative now wants to extend this to hot summer days. "We are currently in discussions with the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, together with the construction employers, to achieve a new regulation," Feiger said. "It must be designed in such a way that employees do not suffer any financial disadvantages due to climate change," he demanded.
