Probably no consequences after fatal police operation in Nienburg

Göttingen – Following the fatal police operation in Nienburg in March 2024, there will likely be no consequences for the 14 officers involved. The Göttingen Police Department told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" that it had found "no conduct that would require disciplinary action." This also concludes the internal proceedings. The Verden Public Prosecutor's Office had already closed the criminal investigation last September. The assessment of a dog handler involved in the operation is still pending. He is alleged to have spread xenophobic and conspiracy-ideological content on social networks – even after the operation. According to the police department, the current investigation has been completed and is "in the final stages of evaluation." The officer has been suspended from duty. During the operation on Easter Saturday 2024, a 46-year-old Gambian was shot dead by police. He had previously threatened officers with a knife. A video of the operation caused a nationwide stir. Accusations of racism have been voiced in Nienburg and online. A fatal police operation in Oldenburg has also recently drawn criticism: A 21-year-old man was shot dead by a police officer there in April 2025. The officer is being investigated for manslaughter.
