The Dogecoin austerity committee is gaining access to sensitive citizen data of millions of Americans. Among other things, medical records, credit card information, and tax documents fall into the hands of the Musk team – illegal, according to several courts. The US government appeals to the Supreme Court.
In the dispute over tech billionaire Elon Musk's Dogecoin savings committee's access to sensitive citizen data, the US government has appealed to the Supreme Court. Referring to the lower court's ruling, the administration of President Donald Trump wrote in its petition to the US Supreme Court that "blatant legal errors" had been committed. Therefore, the Supreme Court's intervention was necessary.
Lower courts had temporarily barred Doge from accessing sensitive data from the Social Security Administration. Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander in Baltimore justified her preliminary injunction a few weeks ago by arguing that the agency had been granted "unrestricted access" to "the personal and private information of millions of Americans" under flimsy pretexts. This included Social Security numbers, medical records, driver's license data, bank and credit card information, and tax records.
According to the judge, Musk and his team's allegations of a "fraud epidemic" were based on "little more than suspicion." Hollander argued that the panel's investigation was like trying to find "the proverbial needle in a haystack"—without knowing whether the needle was even there.
Trump wants to massively cut government spending and has tasked Musk with implementing it. The billionaire is driving the restructuring of the government apparatus with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is attached to the White House. The US President is said to have granted him extensive, but legally questionable, powers to do so. Musk recently announced his intention to slow down in Washington and spend more time with Tesla's leadership. The electric car manufacturer's sales figures have recently declined significantly, particularly in the European market. Analysts attribute this, in part, to his role in the restructuring of the US government. The DOGE department's mandate runs until July 2026.
