At the Grand Tattoo for the outgoing head of government, the Bundeswehr Staff Band played the hit "Respect." Olaf Scholz spoke about his North German temperament as he bid farewell. And paid tribute to his wife.

It's cold in Berlin on this May evening; the guests are wearing coats, and the head of the Chancellery has draped a blanket over his lap. In this chill, the Chancellor, who has always been accused of being so cold, is bid farewell. And yet, as Olaf Scholz intended, it becomes cheerful, even exhilarating once again. By torchlight, the Bundeswehr Staff Band plays "Respect" for him, the hit made world famous above all by Aretha Franklin. "Respect" has programmatic significance for Scholz : During the 2021 election campaign, it was his slogan, a rejection of discrimination, a commitment to social policy. And now, "Respect," as a farewell, in a style of soul music.
