On Thursday, the world's eyes will turn to Istanbul: Will the Ukraine summit take place there? Putin himself has proposed talks, Zelensky wants to be there, and Trump is considering it. The Turkish president, who is struggling for recognition at home, would be in a strong position internationally.

The Turkish president is a realist. One who closely observes what is happening in his country and the region. A look at the news is likely to evoke mixed feelings in Recep Tayyip Erdoğan right now. On the one hand, in March, he saw no other option than to have his rival remanded in custody. The brutal response to poor poll numbers, which alienated large sections of society.

US President Trump is traveling to Saudi Arabia and seems primarily interested in deals that benefit him. His hosts may have hoped for a few more answers from the visit.
