The fight against the forest fire in Gohrischheide continues.

The onset of rain has brought relief to the devastating forest fire in Gohrischheide in northern Saxony. The situation in some areas remains stable, according to the district. There are still recurring outbreaks.

In the evening, a large fire broke out near the Zeithain barracks. However, with the help of the rain, it was quickly and successfully extinguished. The rain also helped calm the situation in other areas that evening. Firefighting operations are scheduled to resume by helicopter this morning.

So far, approximately 2,100 hectares are said to have been affected by the fire. This means that a larger area has burned in the Gohrischheide than the average annual figure in Germany. According to the Federal Agricultural Information Center, 463 fires destroyed approximately 334 hectares of forest last year. The long-term average was 844 hectares.
