He first became president in 2000, after previously serving as prime minister and briefly heading Russia's domestic intelligence agency, the FSB. In an interview with pro-Russian state journalist Pavel Zarubin for the documentary, Putin says he assesses the potential of each possible successor. "Yes, I do," he replies to a direct question. The Russian president emphasizes that any successor must earn "the people's trust" and warns that without this trust, a future president "would have no chance of doing anything serious."
+++ 8:19 p.m. Czech Republic plans to supply Ukraine with up to 1.8 million shells in 2025 +++ As part of the Czech ammunition initiative, up to 1.8 million artillery shells will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of 2025, said Czech President Petr Pavel at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Zelensky. Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochova had previously stated that the country would deliver 1.5 million rounds of various calibers in 2024 and that it had sufficient resources to continue deliveries at the same pace until autumn. Now the number of promised shells has increased by 300,000. The initiative, which is supported by contributions from Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and other countries, has significantly strengthened Ukraine's artillery and improved the shell ratio from 1:10 in favor of Russia to 1:2, says Pavel. The initiative was launched last year in response to a shortage of Ukrainian shells, caused primarily by delays in US military aid in early 2024. On April 27, Ukraine received 400,000 large-caliber ammunition under this initiative.
