Ukraine: 10.6 million displaced persons

According to the UN, around 10.6 million people in Ukraine have been driven from their homes by the Russian war of aggression; in the past six months alone, over 200,000 have had to be relocated from the frontline areas. More than two million homes, ten percent of the total, have been destroyed or damaged, many without heating or electricity, said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, on the third anniversary of the attack on Monday in Geneva. He spoke of a "dark, bloody milestone". Grandi went on to say that 60 percent of the refugees want to return, but that insecurity, housing shortages and a lack of jobs are preventing them from doing so. When the situation improves and return becomes possible, emergency accommodation and humanitarian aid will play a crucial role. Given the extent of the destruction, reconstruction will "not happen overnight".
