Earthquakes recorded near the Yucatan Peninsula: magnitudes and epicenters

Today, Monday, February 24, 2025, two earthquakes were recorded near the Yucatan Peninsula; unusual telluric movements in the region with different magnitudes and epicenters
Mérida, Yucatán.- This Monday, February 24, the Yucatan Peninsula was slightly shaken by two earthquakes, one of which was reported by the National Seismological Service (SMN), measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.

The federal agency's Facebook post provides details of the location, specifying that the place where it was felt the most was the state of Tabasco, recorded at 4:34 p.m.
He added that it occurred at a depth of 26.1 kilometers, although he did not clarify whether it was a trembling or oscillating movement.
“Epicentral region: 92 km NORTH of BORDER, TAB Date and time: 2025-02-24, 16:34:14 (Central Mexico time) Latitude and longitude: 19.368º, -92.626º Depth: 26.1 km.”
The second tremor that was felt this Monday near the Yucatan Peninsula, was recorded this afternoon near the Cayman Islands, with a magnitude of 5.4 , with a depth of 5 km , whose epicenter was located 30 km southwest of Gerge Town and 265.89 km north-northwest of Barra Patuca, Honduras.
This information was released by the Secretary of State in the Office of National Risk and Contingency Management (Copeco) of Honduras and alerted the international community.
According to the SMN, earthquakes are vibrations of the earth caused in the tectonic layers of the globe by the propagation of various types of waves within or on the surface of the earth. Earthquake or tremor are synonyms of the word earthquake.
Earthquakes occur because the Earth is covered by a rocky layer known as the lithosphere, up to 100 km thick, which is fragmented into large portions called tectonic plates.
The mobility of these plates causes frictional forces to be generated at the edges , where the plates make contact, which prevent the displacement of one with respect to the other. If these forces exceed the resistance of the rocks, or the frictional forces are overcome, a violent rupture occurs and the sudden release of the accumulated energy.
Civil Protection recommends staying calm and staying indoors while the earthquake lasts.
- Keep calm.
- Get under a safe place, such as a desk or sturdy table. Once there, hold on to one leg with both hands.
- Stay away from windows, glass, mirrors, exterior doors or walls and anything that could fall on you, such as lamps and furniture.
- If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch away from windows and bookshelves.
- If you are outside: stay away from power lines and poles.
- In a building: Get under a table or desk, away from windows and outside walls. Stay there until the shaking has passed.
- Do not use the elevators
