Firefighters monitor the Mosque of Córdoba after extinguishing the fire.

Members of the Córdoba City Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the Local Police, and Civil Protection will monitor the area affected by a fire at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba throughout the night. The fire was declared completely extinguished at 12:41 a.m. this Saturday, July 9th, and it shocked the entire world and put the World Heritage site (visited by more than two million people each year) in jeopardy for several hours.
Throughout the night, the Cathedral Chapter's maintenance team will be working to clean the affected area following the technicians' instructions. This Saturday , the Mosque will reopen with this area of the Almanzor district cordoned off. The rest of the monument and the temple will remain open as usual.
According to the Córdoba City Council, this device will monitor the fire all night to prevent it from restarting, after it was declared under control at around 11:00 p.m. and without live flames, following a rapid and effective intervention by more than three fire brigades, along with the maintenance team of the Córdoba Cathedral Chapter , owner of the Mosque-Cathedral.
The fire started late in the afternoon by a sweeping machine in a chapel in the Almanzor extension (10th century), a space where chairs for events at the monument are also stored and was covered with a curtain. The rapid spread of the flames between the wood and the fabric reached the roof, where the wood is still more visible, causing the flames to multiply even more.
Soon, all tourists and walkers in the area noticed the flames on the east side of the monument and the rapid deployment of equipment to cordon off the area so firefighters could do their work. There has been no official assessment of the damage yet, although initial reactions from the Mayor of Córdoba, José María Bellido , and Bishop Emeritus Demetrio Fernández indicated that "it's not a catastrophe, but there is damage."
A press conference is scheduled for this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to announce the first official details based on the analysis conducted by the temple and monument's conservation architects and firefighting technicians.
Córdoba has had its heart in its mouth on August 8th since the flames spread and the images went viral. The last fire at the Mosque-Cathedral occurred in 2007 in the basement archive , with thousands of files burned.
