In Coahuila, Section 5 of the SNTE reform to the ISSSTE is rejected: 'it violates labor rights'

In recent hours, there have been various demonstrations by teachers in different states of the country, due to disagreement with the proposed amendment.
Section 5 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) expressed its firm opposition to the reform of the ISSSTE Law promoted by the federal government, ensuring that no reform should jeopardize the labor, salary and benefit rights of education workers.
The proposed reform includes an increase in the labor contributions of public sector workers, affecting approximately 1.5 million employees, mainly teachers. This initiative proposes calculating contributions on the integrated salary, instead of the base salary, which could triple the current deductions and reduce the net income of teachers.

Everardo Padrón, general secretary of Section 5 of the SNTE, indicated that the proposal seeks to obtain financing to strengthen areas such as health and housing, however, he rejected the idea that the new deductions would economically affect education workers, particularly those with lower incomes.
“ The position of Section 5 of the union organization regarding the reform of the ISSSTE law is very clear and very precise: no reform should violate the labor, salary and benefit rights of education workers ,” said Padrón.
In light of this, he explained that Section 5 had begun a day of work which started last Friday with the general secretaries and union representatives of regions one and two with the intention of addressing the issue and the effects on teachers.
The Secretary General stressed that they agree with strengthening areas such as health and housing, which are essential for education workers, but stressed that this funding should not come out of the pockets of teachers.
“We do agree that the health sector should be strengthened; we do agree that the housing sector, which is so necessary for education workers, should be strengthened, but that this funding should not come out of the pockets of the education workers of Mexico or of section 5. That is our totally firm position,” he stressed.

The SNTE said that, if the reform affects teachers, especially those who earn more than 10 UMAs , they will be ready to lead the necessary mobilizations and defend workers' rights.
"If there were any problems, we would be the first to lead movements to ensure that they did not exist ," he said.
