Main causes of death in Mexico in 2024: INEGI

According to preliminary figures from the Statistics of Registered Deaths in Mexico, from the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI) , from January to September 2024, a total of 610,404 deaths were recorded in Mexico.
Compared to 2023, an increase of 14,254 deaths was observed during the same period. Of the total deaths recorded, 589,817 occurred in 2024; the rest occurred in previous years.

According to preliminary data from INEGI, the main causes of death in Mexico during 2024, for both women and men, correspond to three health conditions that constantly affect Mexicans.
- Heart disease (67,594 women and 77,318 men).
- Diabetes Mellitus (42,308 women and 41,784 men).
- Malignant tumors (37,415 women and 33,921 men).
These three diseases are in the same place for both men and women, leaving a total of 144,925 for heart diseases, 84,095 for diabetes and 71,337 for malignant tumors.
From the fourth cause onwards, the diseases or events change depending on the sex of the deceased; for example, in fourth place, the cause for women would be cerebrovascular diseases, while for men it would be accidents.
The highest number of recorded deaths of people occurred in Chihuahua residents per 100 thousand inhabitants, with a standardized rate at the level of
federal entity of 573.3.
