Monreal proposes bringing forward the recall referendum to align with the elections

Mexico City – Legislator Ricardo Monreal Ávila, coordinator of the Morena parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, supported the initiative presented by his party to move up the recall referendum to 2027, so that it can be held on the same day as the legislative elections.
In a press conference, Monreal defended the project promoted by Congressman Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar and pointed out that "there was no demand for an electoral reform now," although he accepted that various reforms related to the process could occur.

The proposal suggests holding the recall referendum in 2027, coinciding with midterm elections, and aims to make the process more participatory. It also promotes electoral reforms related to campaign finance, immunity from prosecution, and the administration of autonomous bodies.
Monreal asserted that aligning the consultation with the legislative election would allow for greater efficiency and citizen participation, although he acknowledged that there will still be dialogue with other parties and legislators to define the details.

The congressman announced that the legislative debate will include the proposed electoral reform agenda, where the recall process represents one of the key elements that Morena considers strategic for the coming cycles.
The initiative still needs to be discussed in committee and submitted to the full Chamber before being validated as a decree, if it moves forward at all. This push comes amid a reconfiguration of the Mexican electoral system and expectations of profound reforms to the democratic process. (With information from El Universal)
