Social housing for young people in Mexico City with more than a year of backlogs

It was considered one of the first strategies to combat the housing shortage and the effects of gentrification ; however, 15 months after being introduced by the previous Mexico City administration, the Social Rental Housing Program for Young People in Mexico City has made little progress.
The capital's Housing Secretary, Inti Muñoz , reported that the first apartments are expected to be available for occupancy in the first months of 2026 , despite the fact that demolition work on what was a parking lot is barely progressing.
A tour conducted by 24 HORAS confirmed the start of work at Doctor Lavista 105, in the Doctores neighborhood , where the construction of 150 homes is planned.

According to local residents, demolition work began approximately three months ago, and no construction work has been done for a year.
"The pilot project announced at the time on Doctor Lavista Street in the Doctores neighborhood is moving forward. It's underway, foundation work is underway, and several more projects have been announced," the secretary stated.
As announced in 2024, the program includes the construction of 150 homes measuring 40 to 60 square meters , with an approximate construction cost of 147 million pesos.
"It's no longer a pilot project; it's a specific work program of the Housing Institute and the Ministry itself; it's a permanent program. It's no longer just a building; the options for strengthening that stock have been expanded. The head of government has announced that of at least 80,000 new or renovated homes we will be producing during this six-year term, 20,000 will be publicly owned rental units," he commented.
He announced that the call for applications to access an apartment will be published when the first units become available, "between the end of this year and the first months of next year."
"We're going to work with an initial block of 300 apartments , but there could be more, reaching approximately 500 as part of this program. In some cases, the option to purchase will be considered, but we're still analyzing the model to make it work best," he stated.
