Unusual: Manuel Adorni denounced and showed how a gymnasium in the former AFIP worked

Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni announced on Wednesday a series of cuts and restructuring in the General Tax Directorate (DGI) , currently under the jurisdiction of the Argentine Tax Collection Agency (ARCA) . The measure includes the elimination of 695 positions and the closure of service offices that, according to the Government, were created for political purposes during the previous administration.

At a press conference, Adorni explained that the reduction involves 27% of the DGI structure , with the elimination of 33 positions at the central headquarters and 88 in the Sub-directorate of Large Taxpayers . In addition, 38 offices for the collection and customer service will be closed, justifying that "90% of the procedures can be carried out online."

" Coincidentally, many of these offices were opened in municipalities that were close to the previous government, such as Hurlingham, Merlo, Florencio Varela, La Matanza, José C. Paz, Quilmes and Berazategui ," the official emphasized, suggesting that their creation responded more to political criteria than to operational needs.

One of the most striking points of the announcement was the discovery of a private gym inside a headquarters of the former AFIP , which, according to Adorni, was reserved for the exclusive use of the organization's top management during previous administrations.

" We found a gym equipped with treadmills, bicycles, dumbbells... a whole gym that was used exclusively by the directors of the extinct AFIP. Of course it will be eliminated and transformed into a space of greater use for the organization ," he said.

The spokesman described the situation as "a real disgrace" and reiterated the government's commitment to reducing public spending and eliminating privileges within the state.

Adorni also mentioned specific cases to exemplify what he considers an unnecessary oversizing of the state structure .

" In the town of Huinca Renancó there were employees with high salaries whose tedious job consisted of answering two queries a day ," he said ironically, reinforcing the idea that the closure of some offices will not affect the service to taxpayers.

The measures announced by Adorni are part of President Javier Milei 's strategy to downsize the State and reduce public spending. Since the beginning of his administration, the Government has promoted cuts in various areas , including ministries, decentralized agencies and state-owned companies.

With this adjustment in ARCA, the government is seeking to show progress in its austerity policy , although the reduction in staff and the closure of offices could generate resistance in some sectors of the public administration.
