“Stop the genocide in Gaza”: Sheinbaum // It was foreseeable that they would die, but... // Vidulfo Rosales

Claudia Sheinbaum's family Pardo is of Jewish origin. In a piece she published in La Jornada on January 12, 2009, she recounts her personal story in detail. She wrote: “Nothing, nothing, nothing can justify the murder of a child. That is why I join the cry of millions around the world calling for a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian territory.” Fifteen years have passed, and one might assume that her opinion as President of the Republic has changed. It basically remains the same: “Mexico's position, in agreement with the international community, is to stop the genocide in Gaza,” she stated yesterday at her morning press conference. “And, of course, the recognition of the two states: the State of Israel and the Palestinian State. And that there cannot be an aggression against the civilian population like the one currently taking place. That is the position the Foreign Minister (Juan Ramón de la Fuente) is taking to the United Nations Assembly, and the position we hold, and it is important that it be known.”
Recognition of Palestine
Sheinbaum added: “The first time a president, in this case the President, presents or receives the credentials of the Palestinian State and recognizes the person who is currently serving as the ambassador of Palestine is with our government. And always seeking, as a Mexican State, as a nation, within our foreign policy: peace, non-intervention, and the self-determination of peoples.” This is mandated by the Constitution. The Palestinian embassy's response: “We thank President @Claudiashein for Mexico's principled positions and for calling things by their name: what is happening in Gaza is genocide. Naming it is an act of truth, and truth is the first step toward justice.”
They had no chance of living
“I am a doctor specializing in orthopedics and traumatology,” Salvador Antonio Arteaga Domínguez writes to me, regarding the La Concordia Bridge tragedy. I lived through the San Juanico tragedy, seeing people burned over 100 percent of their body surface, walking, talking, and dying quickly. He adds: “Treatment for second- and third-degree burns is extremely expensive, and any human being with second- and third-degree burns exceeding 60 percent of their body surface area has a very low chance of survival. Since the first notes and superficial descriptions of the injured came out, those of us who know something about this situation thought that most of these injured would die.”
The collection
Agreed, Dr. Arteaga Domínguez. But the pain can be alleviated if the hospital has the equipment to deal with the crisis, which, apparently, is not the case. If they had been wealthy people, their end would have been the same, but not as terrible. The saddest thing is that the mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, is forming a committee to collect donations to cover the expenses of the survivors, despite having a budget of 291.525 billion pesos this year.

Subject: Breaking up?
I applaud, President Sheinbaum, your decision to call what Israel is doing in Gaza GENOCIDE. It is now necessary to take the logical steps, starting with the withdrawal of our ambassador from Tel Aviv; severing trade relations, and then proceeding days later to severing diplomatic relations. Drunk with arrogance and flaunting his impunity, Netanyahu declared: "There will be no Palestinian state, nor will I stop the war."
