In celebration of Mother's Day, one of the busiest commercial holidays in the country, the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN) has decided to intensify its monitoring of electronic invoicing in more than 120,000 commercial establishments to ensure compliance with this requirement, which has been the subject of debate in the past.

For this reason, starting this Friday, May 9, and continuing throughout the weekend, the entity will conduct real-time monitoring using artificial intelligence and data analytics tools to ensure accurate transaction reporting.

According to Luis Eduardo Llinás Chica, acting director general of the Dian, the agency is implementing its modernization process through the Electronic Invoicing Monitoring Center, which features advanced technology to ensure the accuracy of tax returns. "Our modernization process has allowed us to develop technological tools for continuous monitoring through the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics. These developments will be used throughout this weekend to monitor the correct issuance of electronic invoices and the billing of all commercial transactions, which will be reflected in the accuracy of tax returns," the official stated.

Real-time surveillance

It should be noted that the tax authority's deployment will not be limited to virtual monitoring. To ensure compliance with tax regulations, approximately 2,800 officials will visit approximately 2,100 previously selected establishments. Several taxpayers have been identified with potential inconsistencies between reported electronic invoicing and VAT returns for the 2024 tax year.

Monitoring will focus on areas with high commercial activity and major cities, where a significant volume of transactions is expected. On this occasion, the agency seeks to ensure that merchants comply with the issuance of electronic invoices and that recorded transactions match tax reports.

According to the Dian, social oversight also plays a key role in the success of this strategy, so Llinás Chica called on citizens to demand electronic invoicing for all their purchases and contribute to effective resource control to boost the nation's revenues, which are converted into development.

"It is essential that every buyer request their electronic invoice on this special date. This helps us maintain transparency in commerce and contributes to the financing of social projects that are key to the well-being of our nation," the Director emphasized.

Bogotá under the magnifying glass

The nation's capital will be one of the main focuses of this intensive surveillance campaign , as visits are planned to 334 taxpayers in Bogotá who present alleged inaccuracies in their VAT returns totaling more than $71 billion. In addition, the monitoring will include a review of the electronic invoicing of 5,606 taxpayers belonging to various economic activities. The agency reminded citizens that, to facilitate the detection of irregularities, they can report any anomalies in their electronic invoicing through the WhatsApp channel provided for this purpose: +57 310 5830000. This measure seeks to promote citizen oversight in the fight against tax evasion.

The entity concluded by reiterating that the objective of this strategy is not to hinder commercial activity, but rather to promote transparency and ensure that VAT revenue is used for social projects. "It's not about persecuting merchants, but rather ensuring compliance with regulations so that the country has the necessary resources to fund key programs," Llinás Chica stated.
