'Zelensky's stupidity': President Petro criticises US-Ukraine deal

President Gustavo Petro was widely critical of the agreement reached by Donald Trump and Volodomir Zelensky on the management of mineral resources. The United States will have control of 50 percent of the exploitation of minerals, natural gas and oil in Ukraine in exchange for the aid provided in 2022 and as a way to ensure that security aid continues.
For the Colombian president, the move is a sign of “stupidity” and he even went so far as to say that the Ukrainian president is giving away his country and that his war with Russia was due to manipulation by Western Europe.

“Zelensky is stupid, and I say this clearly, for allowing himself to be manipulated by Western Europeans, who do not know where they are going, whether towards Hitler, or towards nothing; they fight with their Slavic brothers and end up giving Ukraine to the Americans,” was Gustavo Petro’s message regarding the agreement that will be signed next Friday.
The agreement reached by Donald Trump with the Ukrainian president would imply that all mineral, oil and natural gas exploitation would have 50 percent participation by the United States in a joint investment fund in which the United States would have greater decision-making power.
According to Trump, with this agreement, Ukraine begins to compensate for the military aid that the United States has provided, close to 350 billion dollars, and also achieves a guarantee of more security aid “and the right to continue fighting.”

It is worth remembering that the US president has had rapprochements with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to end the war in Ukraine. However, they have negotiated rather disadvantageous conditions for the country invaded since 2022.
For his part, President Gustavo Petro has been critical of the war in Ukraine and in the first years of his mandate he proposed a peace conference to negotiate an end to it. He even attended the Munich security conference in 2023 to present this proposal.
