Sheinbaum announces review of the IMMEX program due to tax abuses in customs

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that the Maquiladora Manufacturing Industry and Export Services Program (IMMEX) will be reviewed by the federal government. The measure seeks to correct tax abuses , where some companies have imported products to sell in Mexico without paying VAT, despite the fact that the program is designed to support exports.
IMMEX allows the temporary import of goods necessary for industrial or service processes intended for the production, processing, or repair of foreign goods for subsequent export, as part of the Trade Agreement with the United States.
Sheinbaum emphasized that greater order and transparency will be sought in customs , establishing shared responsibility between public officials and customs agents.
"These temporary import permits have been widely abused. Merchandise arriving from abroad remains in Mexico without paying VAT. We will ensure that only exports retain tax benefits," the president explained.
These changes are expected to maintain the advantages of the trade agreement for temporary value-added imports returning abroad, while preventing improper sales in the domestic market.
