OpenAI releases ChatGPT-5, its most advanced model: the most surprising features and differences with GPT-4

OpenAI is ushering in a new era of artificial intelligence with the fifth generation of its flagship generative AI model: ChatGPT-5 , unveiled globally on Thursday, promises to be smarter, faster, and less "hallucinating" than its predecessors.
During a livestreamed event, Sam Altman described GPT-5 as "the best model in the world" and an "important step" in the company's journey toward developing a general artificial intelligence that brings significant improvements in coding, writing, and performing complex tasks .
The company's co-founder and CEO said this latest version "is a significant step toward truly capable models." However, he cautioned that more work remains to be done to achieve a type of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that thinks like humans.
"This isn't a model that continually learns as it's implemented based on new findings, something I think should be part of IAG. But the level of capability here is a huge improvement," Altman added.

This model is particularly adept at having AI act as an "agent" that independently handles computing tasks, explained Michelle Pokrass of the development team.
Altman said he hopes the ability to create software programs on demand , called "vibe-coding," will be a "fundamental element of the new era of ChatGPT-5."
As an example, OpenAI executives demonstrated live how the bot was asked to create a web application for learning French . With a simple prompt , the developers had the necessary code in a matter of seconds to program the page and test it live.
The web application created with Chat GPT-5 to learn French.
ChatGPT-5 was also trained to be trustworthy and limit itself to providing the most helpful answers possible without contributing to seemingly harmful missions, according to Alex Beutel, OpenAI's security research lead.
"We created assessments to measure the prevalence of deception and trained the model to be honest," Beutel said.

Unlike its predecessor, GPT-4 , this new system is truly multimodal : it can understand and generate text, images, voice, and even live video within a single conversation. This means there's no longer a need to use different tools or bots for separate tasks: GPT-5 integrates everything into a single platform .
Additionally, the new model can remember past conversations, adapt to your long-term goals (such as helping you study or achieve personal goals), and respond more accurately thanks to an improved reasoning engine. While it doesn't yet generate videos (that's what Sora, another OpenAI product, is for), it can analyze them in real time and give you practical guidance.
For his part, Altman clarified not only the differences between the most recent models, but also with the first ones that established the use of this generative artificial intelligence.
" GPT-3 felt like I was talking to a high school student: You ask a question, maybe you get a good answer, maybe you get something silly," Altman said.
" GPT-4 felt like I was talking to a college student; GPT-5 is the first time it really feels like I'm talking to a PhD expert on any topic," he noted.
Therefore, the company's developers conclude that the leap between models is not just technical : it is a sign of where this everyday technology is heading, increasingly integrated, useful, and difficult to differentiate from a human mind.
For now, the fifth generation of this AI is available to all ChatGPT users, although those who pay for the Pro subscription get access to faster speeds, permanent memory, and advanced features. Microsoft also incorporated it from day one into Copilot and GitHub, two key tools for programmers and creators.
On the other hand, this global launch came one day after OpenAI announced that it would allow the US government to use an enterprise-grade version of ChatGPT for a year for just $1.
Federal employees in the Executive Branch will have access to ChatGPT Enterprise virtually free of charge in collaboration with the U.S. General Services Administration, the company announced.
This week, the company also launched two new free generative AI models that can be customized by users, to compete with similar products from companies in the United States and China .
The release of the models, dubbed "gpt-oss-120b" and "gpt-oss-20b," comes at a time when the creator of ChatGPT is under pressure to share the inner workings of its software to respect its original ethos as a non-profit organization.
