In Épernay, the municipal councilor who hosted an illegal camp during the grape harvest resigns following revelations by L'Humanité

Following the revelations in L'Humanité , Édouard Abon, the winegrower and municipal councillor of Épernay who hosted an illegal camp of grape harvesters dismantled by the labour inspectorate on his land, has resigned.
Christine Mazy, the right-wing mayor of Épernay (Marne), announced on Facebook on September 5: "Édouard Abon informed me of his decision to resign from his position as municipal councilor." This resignation follows a labor inspection carried out on an illegal camp set up, as revealed by L'Humanité on August 28 , on land belonging to this same Édouard Abon.
The resigning council member from the municipal majority is also a winemaker and director of the Champion-Devaux champagne house. This decision thus appears directly linked to the upcoming municipal elections, with the aim of not undermining his own camp.
Christine Mazy's comments attest to this: "I condemn any accommodation for grape harvesters that does not comply with the Labor Code. Regarding the case in question, I will wait for the outcome of the ongoing investigation before making a comment." The CGT has led a series of initiatives in the run-up to the grape harvest to alert seasonal workers to practices that do not respect human rights.
