The law prohibits bakers and florists from employing staff on May 1st . The fines issued to violators last year in Vendée reignited the debate. Some chose to open without their off-duty employees.

For years, many bakeries and flower shops have opened on May 1st and had their employees work, without any problems.

But, in 2024, the situation changed, with the verbalization by labor inspectors of five bakers in Vendée.

Fines of €750 to €1,500 provided for by law

In the eyes of the law, May 1st is not just another public holiday. According to the French Labor Code, it is a mandatory day off for all employees, except for those employed by a company that, "due to the nature of its activity, cannot interrupt work." This is the case for so-called service establishments, such as hospitals, transportation, hotels, and restaurants.
