In an interview with our colleagues at Challenges, Jean-Michel Aulas, who is not yet officially a candidate for mayor of Lyon in the 2026 municipal elections, promises to waive his mayoral allowance if he wins.

As the weeks go by, the former OL boss's candidacy seems to be getting closer. This Wednesday, May 21, in an interview with our colleagues at Challenges , Jean-Michel Aulas unveiled what appears to be the beginnings of an election program. Explaining that he wants to prioritize his campaign on the themes of youth, housing, security, attractiveness, and mobility, the 76-year-old businessman also took the opportunity to make a first announcement.

The former boss of Olympique Lyonnais, 310th richest professional player in France with 450 million euros according to Challenges, thus announces that he wants to " give up the mayor's allowances and, with the funds released, support fundamental associations for Lyon's youth, for example for the Sport dans la Ville association, and also for medicine (the Léon Bérard Research Center) ." An announcement effect as if to anticipate the criticism that his political opponents could formulate about his fortune. Currently, the Lyon mayor, Grégory Doucet, receives 7500 euros gross each month.

Credited with more than 24% of voting intentions in the latest polls, Jean-Michel Aulas has been testing his support and political capital for several weeks on X. While he regularly targets Grégory Doucet and Bruno Bernard, both Green elected officials, the businessman from L'Arbresle, does not want to be politically labeled for the time being. " My compass is the interests of Lyon, not political labels. My party is that of solidarity ," he asserts in words that sound unmistakably like those of a declared candidate.

While nothing seems to have been decided yet, the business leader specifies that he is giving himself until the beginning of September to decide whether or not to run for mayor of Lyon. " It's too important a decision to be made in haste ," JMA adds, still speaking to our colleagues. A decision that, less than a year before the municipal elections, seems to have become an open secret.
