Labor has won a "resounding victory," enthuses the center-left weekly The Saturday Paper . The party, led by current Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, came out on top in the Australian general election held this Saturday, May 3, according to results published by the country's public broadcaster ABC News .

Having led the country since 2023, Anthony Albanese made history today by becoming “the first leader since John Howard in 2004 to be re-elected, and the first Labor leader to win a second term since Bob Hawke in the 1980s,” The Saturday Paper reports . “ Being your Prime Minister is the greatest honor of my life ,” he told his supporters gathered in Sydney, “ emotionally .” In his victory speech, the Australian Prime Minister also thanked Peter Dutton, the leader of the conservative opposition and his main opponent in this campaign marked by the issue of the cost of living, reports ABC News .

The latter, for his part, conceded defeat to his voters, and also acknowledged that he himself was defeated in his own constituency of Dickson, Queensland, which was won by Labor. “ There are good MPs and candidates who lost their seats… And I’m sorry about that,” he apologized to his supporters. For ABC News, this double defeat makes him the big “victim” of this election. “ No federal opposition leader has ever lost their seat in an election,” states the Australian public broadcaster. The Liberal Party will therefore have to find a new leader quickly, while ABC election analyst Antony Green believes that Labor could finish the count with an “overwhelming” majority.
