A candidacy in the 2032 presidential election? Emmanuel Macron seemed on Tuesday, May 13, on TF1 not to close the door : "I am the first president in our history who does not have the constitutional right to run again, it has never happened. I think about one thing every day, and that is to see this term through to the end. When I have finished, I will think about what comes next, at that point I could answer you, but today, I have not thought about it."

The head of state is frustrated at not being able to serve a third consecutive term; the constitution has prevented him from doing so since the 2008 reform. The logical next step is therefore to wait for the next round, in 2032. He will still be very young, for a politician—not even 55. The advisor to a prominent minister is convinced: "Emmanuel Macron wants to continue to exist, and his aura will be all the stronger after 2027."

Many around him believe he'll still have a chance. "He's already shown he can do impossible things," a Macronist MP told franceinfo . According to another, the head of state "wants to serve France, he has that in his blood, something very visceral in his relationship with the French people." This hypothesis is preaching to the converted, like this minister who owes him a lot: "Emmanuel Macron has been at risk since he was born." According to them, what happens next will depend on the context.

If a candidate from the central bloc, Macronist or right-wing, wins the next election in two years, it will be more complicated for him to come back, to regain a place . But if the extreme right comes to power, "he will have a clear path." This is in any case the analysis of a minister's close friend: "Even if he leaves alone with his bundle, he will have the funding, and a base of votes, at least 15%, but he will need the energy, and the ideas."

What will he do in the meantime, for five years? Emmanuel Macron, who insists he's focused on the last two years of his term, is saying nothing. Senior officials who have followed him since 2017 believe he will remain central and are already imagining the role he could occupy. "There is enormous expectation in Brussels, according to one of them, of what he will do next... Why not president of the European Commission, given the context? In any case, we'll have to find a tailor-made role for him."
