Thionville. A major project is being carried out to modernize the overhead electricity network in Thionville, Manom and Cattenom.

The electricity grid is getting a makeover. A major modernization project for the municipalities of Thionville, Manom, and Cattenom has been underway since January. It spans 6 kilometers and involves around fifty Enedis technicians.

This work is being carried out while maintaining the power supply by installing generators where possible. However, some of the work requires the intervention of technicians authorized to work on the 20,000-volt network.

The aerial section of the network was examined by a drone. This subsequently allowed for a diagnosis of the network's condition. Damaged parts, such as connectors, were replaced, and the network was reinforced for the next twenty years. The operation cost €98,000, excluding the burying of part of the network.

"The concrete structure of the poles and the wires are not being replaced since their lifespan is much longer, but the anchors and safety devices wear out over time. This is necessary to preserve the power line. Across the entire renovated network, which stretches six kilometers, we have 920 customers," says François Campana, operations agent at Enedis in Thionville.

Some constraints had to be taken into account on the network to access the top of the electricity poles. The cradle isn't necessarily usable everywhere. Ladders placed parallel to the poles must be deployed. In the air, poles are used to avoid risky postures and movements. "We had two supports on islands in the middle of the ponds, we had to access them with the equipment using boats. When working in equestrian centers, you also have to take into account the proximity of the horses, who are curious," he adds.

The work was divided into four different sectors to limit the deployment of generators. The entire project will be completed by the end of September. A 1.8 km section of the overhead power grid will not be renovated because it will be buried underground.

In this particular sector, the work is being carried out in consultation with the municipality of Thionville and the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), making it possible to preserve five supports in order to facilitate the nesting of storks .
