Thionville: Six years after the bark beetle attacks, the municipal forest is reborn

When, six years ago, the Thionville municipal forest suffered from drought and bark beetle attacks , an entire ecosystem was hit. Fir trees, spruce trees… No conifer could resist this destructive insect. Faced with this disaster, a reforestation plan was launched in 2023, and since then, nearly 20,000 trees have been replanted. Today, “nearly 90% of the area is reforested,” says Yoan Crunel, head of the Thionville territorial unit at the National Forestry Office (ONF). The choice of species was not made at random: “Mediterranean species more resistant to drought and climate change.”
