Trump administration deports Asian immigrants to South Sudan

On May 20, approximately ten people, including a Vietnamese and a Burmese national, were deported to South Sudan, despite the ongoing civil war there. This expulsion raises concerns about the safety and human rights of the individuals being returned.
Earlier this week, the Trump administration deported at least two Asian nationals to South Sudan, defying a court order prohibiting such deportation. The two men, originally from Vietnam and Myanmar, were being held by U.S. immigration authorities.
The American media outlet Politico reports that their lawyers claim to have been informed of the deportation only unexpectedly on Monday, May 19. The next day, their two clients were on a plane.
Their destination is controversial. According to the State Department, South Sudan is plagued by “kidnappings, sexual abuse, torture, and extrajudicial killings,” the New York correspondent for the British daily The Independent reported . The nationals’ lawyers have filed an emergency motion with a federal judge requesting “their immediate return” to the United States.
