"20 minutes of bursts of fire," the Libyan Coast Guard fires on the ship rescuing migrants.

Valeria Taurino, general director of SOS Méditerranée, denounced the Libyan Coast Guard's armed attack on the vessel that was saving lives in danger in the Mediterranean: "20 minutes of gunfire, not an isolated act but the direct consequence of Italy and Europe's collaboration with the Libyan Coast Guard."
Photos of bullets and shattered windows document the attack on the Ocean Viking in international waters. The NGO SOS Méditerranée describes a deliberate and violent attack by the Libyan Coast Guard, which fired hundreds of shots at their vessel. It had just rescued a rubber dinghy off the coast of Libya, saving 47 people, including nine unaccompanied minors. Fortunately, both the 87 survivors and the crew are safe. Other NGOs have expressed solidarity with SOS Méditerranée, condemning the attack. The Red Cross also considers this attack against rescuers unacceptable. The SOS Méditerranée vessel, which was initially scheduled to disembark at Marina di Carrara, 1,300 km from the rescue area, is now heading for Syracuse, its new destination.
