ChatGPT: 700 million weekly active users

In a few days (perhaps hours), GPT-5 , the new AI model that will offer reasoning capabilities (the family of o models will therefore be eliminated), will arrive. OpenAI has meanwhile revealed that the number of weekly active users of ChatGPT will soon reach 700 million .

ChatGPT: A Danger for Google?

When users discuss chatbots, they almost always mention ChatGPT . OpenAI has thus "monopolized" the market, crushing the competition. The data demonstrates the success achieved by the startup founded less than 10 years ago. Nick Turley, ChatGPT's development manager, announced that it will reach 700 million weekly active users in the coming days.

This represents an increase of 200 million users compared to March and approximately four times the number in August 2024. The figure includes all users, including those who access the chatbot for free and those with Pro, Plus, Edu, Enterprise, and Team subscriptions. There are over five million paid users (up from three million in June). Over three billion messages are written every day.

ChatGPT's popularity has increased significantly with the advent of GPT-4o image generation. By comparison, the Gemini app has 450 million active monthly users. Assuming approximately 2.8 billion monthly users, ChatGPT has even surpassed the AI Overview feature (2 billion monthly users).

OpenAI's main competitor is therefore Google . According to data from Sensor Tower , users use ChatGPT about 13.2 days a month compared to Google's approximately 18.6 days, and it could soon overtake them, thanks to the arrival of GPT-5 . CEO Sam Altman demonstrated a response provided by the new model on X.

Anthropic recently revoked access to Claude Code, as OpenAI would use the AI agent to improve GPT-5's code generation capabilities.
