Dogs forced to fight to the end. Now they are safe

The Cave Canem Foundation has been involved in an operation to combat the criminal circuit of clandestine dog fighting. The foundation has announced that following a request from the competent authorities, the Cave Canem Board of Directors met urgently and responded immediately in a positive manner, activating all the resources necessary to intervene.
"It's incredible to think how the life of four living beings can depend on a simple decision, " he says. Federica Faiella , president of the Cave Canem Foundation. «When the authorities called, the Foundation's Board of Directors met in a few minutes. Three yeses. Without hesitation. Federica Faiella, Claudio Esposito, Mirko Zuccari: no one turned away. We said yes to judicial custody, but now we need everyone's help» .

The Foundation has taken judicial custody of four dogs – two adult females, an adult male and a puppy less than a year old – subjected to conditions of extreme mistreatment and forced to fight for survival.
These animals, innocent victims of systematic violence, have been given sweet and dissonant names compared to the past they have lived : Alba, Goccia, Brodo and Sugo . A symbolic choice, made after the rescue, to mark a turning point and the beginning of a new life.
The transfer operations, organized in a few hours, were made possible thanks to the timely synergy between the judiciary, the judicial police forces and the specialized teams of the Foundation . To all of them goes our most sincere thanks.

Today the four dogs are in a protected facility, where they receive dedicated veterinary care and are accompanied on a personalized behavioral recovery path. The physical wounds are visible. The emotional ones, deep. Their looks tell the horror suffered more than any other word.
"These dogs are alive, but deeply scarred. Their bodies tell of the torture. Their eyes, the terror. They need urgent veterinary care, a safe place, but above all a complex and delicate behavioral path, to help them come out of the darkness and start trusting again. In themselves, in others, in the world. They are wounded in their bodies, but above all in their souls. They have seen violence as the only way to survive. Bringing them back into balance will be a long, hard, complex job. But it is possible", he assures Mirko Zuccari, Dog Trainer Manager Cave Canem Foundation.
In full respect of the ongoing investigations, the Foundation – it underlines in a note – will maintain the utmost confidentiality so as not to compromise the work of the judiciary and allow full light to be shed on criminal responsibilities.
To ensure the sustainability of the intervention, an extraordinary fundraising campaign has been launched, aimed at covering the costs of veterinary care, behavioral rehabilitation and safety measures. You can donate online

The therapeutic path will be coordinated by Mirko Zuccari , Dog Trainer Manager of the Cave Canem Foundation, supported by the Team of Dog Trainers. Legal supervision is entrusted to Attorney Federica Faiella , President of the Foundation. A multidisciplinary working group composed of expert consultants in animal protection has also been activated, who will collaborate in synergy with the institutions involved.
