Drought: More water for the Catania plain from the Castello and Ancipa reservoirs

Water resources for the Catania Plain are increasing. At today's meeting, the regional steering committee accepted the proposal from Regional Councilor for Agriculture Salvatore Barbagallo, with particular reference to the situation of the irrigation areas served by the Castello reservoirs and the Ancipa-Pozzillo system.

"Based on a careful evaluation," says Barbagallo, "and without impacting the water resources already allocated for drinking water in all the towns served by the systems managed by Ancipa, Fanaco, and Castello, an additional 300,000 cubic meters from the Castello reservoir and 3,500,000 cubic meters from the Ancipa reservoir have been allocated to the agricultural sector for the water supply of the Catania plain."

The decision, which will increase water supplies in the Castello district and extend the irrigation season in the Catania Plain, was made in light of the overall water availability in the two districts and taking into account additional resources resulting from interventions carried out following the control room's planning (desalination plants and wells).
