How many cars are produced in European countries? Here's how much the volumes have dropped compared to 2019

Although it is not in its most flourishing period, the automotive industry remains one of Europe's driving industries. Not only from a sales point of view, but also from a production one . The automotive sector is in fact a sector that employs many workers in the Old Continent, despite the closures and drops in production in recent years, also due to geopolitical phenomena, such as the pandemic, as well as economic ones. So let's find out how many cars (passenger cars plus commercial vehicles) were produced in 2023 , and the difference compared to 2019 (the last year before the pandemic), in Italy, France, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain and the United Kingdom. It is important to underline that in the European Union, which includes all the countries mentioned above with the exception of the United Kingdom, where however there is a similar mandate regarding electric vehicles, it will be forbidden to register non-electric cars starting from 2035 . This has led many companies to invest especially in the production of electric cars, which at the moment are not having a homogeneous response on the markets of the various European countries. This is another factor that has contributed to the general decline in production recorded in Europe. The data reported were processed by Ceic Data.
In our country, in 2023, 880,085 cars were produced . This is a lower number than the last pre-pandemic figure, that of 2019, which was equal to 915,291 cars .
The data is better for France , where 1,505,076 cars were produced in 2023. These numbers are much lower, however, than those of 2019, when more than two million cars were produced ( 2,172,515 ).
The driving force behind the European automotive industry is Germany , where 4,109,371 cars were assembled in 2023. However, production is lower than in 2019, which amounted to 4,663,749 cars.
In 2023, 612,882 cars were produced in Poland. This is a lower number than in 2019, when 649,864 cars were assembled.
In the Czech Republic, 1,404,501 cars were produced in 2023, a number not far from the 1,433,961 of 2019. In fact, the difference is less than 30 thousand units.
In Spain, in 2023, 2,451,221 cars were assembled. Production down compared to 2019, when 2,822,632 cars were produced.
Outside the European Union, but in the Old Continent at a geographical level, even in the United Kingdom the car market has shrunk in the years following the pandemic. In 2023, 1,025,474 cars were assembled across the Channel, a lower figure than the 1,381,405 of 2019.
