Investigation begins on Jack Smith, the prosecutor who investigated Trump

Donald Trump's vendetta doesn't even spare Jack Smith, the former special counsel who indicted him for the classified Mar-a-Lago documents and the Capitol storming. The Office of Special Counsel launched a formal investigation into him after Republican Senator Tom Cotton, a close ally of the tycoon, sent a letter earlier this week accusing him of taking blatantly political action to hinder Trump in his 2024 presidential bid.

"Jack Smith's actions were clearly intended to damage President Trump's election, and Smith should be held fully accountable," Cotton said.

Smith—appointed special counsel to investigate Trump by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022—was accused by the president and his Republican allies, including Senator Tom Cotton, of violating the Hatch Act, a federal law that bars certain public officials from engaging in political activity. Smith subsequently resigned as special counsel.
