Sanremo prison brawl, four inmates hospitalized
A night of high tension in the Sanremo prison, where the prison police were busy until 3 in the morning quelling a fight between inmates in a state of evident drunkenness.
Four of them were urgently transferred to the emergency room. The alarm made it necessary for about twenty officers to return to duty. The one who denounced it was Fabio Pagani, secretary of the Uilpa penitentiary police, who has long been talking about a penitentiary system out of control: "Our prisons are drug dealing centers where everything circulates: alcohol, smartphones, drugs. Sanremo is the tip of the iceberg". Pagani denounces unsustainable working conditions: shifts of up to 26 hours, unpaid overtime and a staffing level that is 18,000 less than necessary. "Not only is it not possible to guarantee safety, but someone can become a victim or take advantage of it. Italian prisons - he concludes - are now outside the law. Urgent interventions are needed on staffing, evacuation and system reforms. Tomorrow could be too late".
