That 15% that's causing controversy: numbers and unknowns

That 15% that's causing controversy: numbers and unknowns

Negotiations between the two sides of the Atlantic, which have been ongoing for over three months, have concluded with an agreement on 15% tariffs on goods sold overseas from Europe, starting August 1st. Tariffs on cars have also been raised from 25% to 15%. However, nothing changes for tariffs on steel and aluminum, which the United States has raised to 50%. The pharmaceutical sector, one of the most exposed, is also excluded from the agreement.

"We cannot depend on third countries for medicines," Trump said. According to the US president, the agreement will have a significant impact on agriculture and benefit the auto sector. In exchange for tariffs halved, compared to the 30% Trump had threatened, Europe will purchase $750 billion in energy and weapons from the United States. And it has committed to investing $600 billion.

According to Unioncamere, the 15% tariff will have a limited impact on the Italian economy because "only a third of Italian companies export overseas, and most of those that do are large, thus more structured and able to absorb shocks." Artisans, however, are concerned: "Compensation and support are needed," warns the CNA.
