The EU Foreign Affairs Council has given the green light to the extension of Luigi Di Maio as EU envoy for the Gulf. Il Foglio had anticipated the news last month , publishing the letter with which the High Representative Kaja Kallas had informed the 27 member states of the desire to extend the mandate of the former Italian minister until 28 February 2027. “The excellent performance of the EUSR for the Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, has represented a great contribution in advancing EU-GCC cooperation. He has played a key role in the development of both regional and bilateral cooperation with the Gulf countries in the field of political consultations, dialogues on security, trade and investment, green energy and people-to-people relations”, the document reads.

In line with the Joint Communication on a Strategic Partnership with the Gulf - explains the Foreign Affairs Council - Di Maio will continue to develop a stronger, more comprehensive and strategic EU partnership with the countries of the Gulf region , contributing to the stability and security of the area by engaging and supporting dialogue and long-term regional solutions with individual Gulf partners and relevant regional organisations.

According to Ansa, the former Foreign Minister's mandate should also be extended to the geographical area of ​​the Red Sea.
