Following the publication of the news about the urban planning corruption investigation involving municipal officials, developers, and even Milan's mayor, Beppe Sala, online public opinion shifted dramatically. Data released by the communications firm Arcadia shows a steep decline in positive sentiment surrounding Sala: between July 12th and 14th, before the case broke, 54% of the content analyzed was favorable, compared to 31% that was critical. Over the next three days, from July 15th to 17th, the situation reversed: negative comments rose to 63%, while positive ones dropped to 15%.
The prosecutor's investigation alleges the existence of a system of favors and corruption in the management of Milan's urban planning, useful for expediting the approval of construction projects. House arrest has been requested for several public officials, including the Urban Planning Councilor Giancarlo Tancredi and the former president of the Landscape Commission Giuseppe Marinoni .
