The City Council removes League posters regarding the Security Decree. It sparks a political clash.
"Snatch a bag on the subway? You'll end up in jail without excuses," "Squat a house? We'll kick you out in 24 hours," are the posters that appeared in Rome, posted by the League, and accompanied by images created with artificial intelligence, which within a few days sparked controversy.
The party's goal is to explain the contents of the government's security decree. After several citizens' complaints, the billboards ended up on the table of the relevant Capitoline office, which demanded their removal or covering within 24 hours, deeming the posters "offensive and disrespectful."
It's an immediate back-and-forth. The League announces it will take action in all its forums against what it calls an abuse. In support of the regional secretary, the party issues a national statement, adding: "New posters will be distributed throughout Italy to defend freedom of expression."
The Capitoline administration rejects the accusation of censorship and responds by explaining that the billboards were removed because they violate current regulations on ethical content in advertising and contain stereotypes of an ethnic group. Furthermore, they conclude that an appeal may be filed. The controversy doesn't end there; according to the League, T-shirts are also in production for distribution throughout Italy.
