Tuscany regional elections: Five Star Movement says yes to broad-based coalition. Now Giani's nomination is on the horizon.

Florence, August 7, 2025 – In the regional elections on October 12 in Tuscany, the Five Star Movement has said yes to a broad field with the Democratic Party, Avs, Italia Viva, Azione, +Europa, Socialists and Republicans.
At least 60% of those registered. This is the verdict of the online consultation on the Skyvote platform launched by President Giuseppe Conte, after establishing the irreparable rift between early supporters of openness and hardliners.
The voting procedures concluded at 6 pm on Thursday 7 August, just three hours before the 9 pm meeting, during which the Tuscan Democratic Party, led by Schleinian secretary Emiliano Fossi, will proceed to officially nominate reformist Eugenio Giani as a (re)candidate for regional president.
Of those eligible to vote in the M5S, 5,202 members to be precise, 2,568 expressed their political opinion. The question was this: "In the regional elections to be held in Tuscany in 2025, do you think the 5 Star Movement should participate alone, or do you think it would be better to verify whether the conditions exist for it to participate in the coalition promoted by the Democratic Party in opposition to the center-right coalition, granting the Movement's leaders a mandate to conclude, in writing, a clear agreement that integrates all the projects and strategic objectives, as emerged during the meetings and territorial assemblies held in recent weeks, listed on the website ."
Well, this is the result: 1,030 people voted for the Movement to participate alone in the next regional elections . 1,538 people voted for the Movement to verify whether the conditions are met for it to join the coalition. In percentage terms, the internal split within the 5 Star Movement base is clearly evident: 59.89% in favor of a yes vote and 40.11% against joining the Democratic Party.
"I am proud to be part of a vibrant community," says Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte , "that engages in dialogue and discussion, sometimes heatedly, but always to seek the best solutions for the benefit of its citizens. In Tuscany, we have created a broad and transparent decision-making process that hasn't simply responded to a question posed from above, but has also included numerous meetings at various local levels, engaging all members in a frank and informed debate." Now it's time for discussion, says Conte: "The voice of our members now gives us a clear mandate to engage with the presidential candidate, to rigorously verify that the conditions the local community deemed essential for signing a programmatic agreement are respected and clearly stated."
"I welcome the outcome of the Five Star Movement's consultation," said Regional President Eugenio Giani, "which paves the way for building a progressive coalition for the upcoming regional elections. This is an important result that places our region at the forefront of the new political season and strengthens the dialogue between political and civic forces committed to a more just, modern, green, and inclusive Tuscany. I would like to thank the Democratic Party of Tuscany, and in particular its regional secretary, Emiliano Fossi , who patiently built a network of unity and convergence. I am convinced of the importance of the political alliance proposed by Secretary Elly Schlein at the national level. A shared journey is now beginning, which I am confident will give rise to a strong, inclusive government project capable of meeting future challenges."
"As the Tuscan Democratic Party, we are very pleased with the outcome of the Five Star Movement membership vote," said Emiliano Fossi, Tuscan Democratic Party Secretary. "This is another very important step in building a broad and clear center-left political project that can serve as a laboratory for providing the country with a solid alternative to the Meloni government. From now on, we will take all necessary steps to find a compromise with the Five Star Movement and other allied political forces, building the progressive camp together. The goal is to share with voters an advanced and innovative program for Tuscany , both present and future, one that places central importance on our region's mission as a land of rights for all, and a fight against inequality. We are satisfied because the collaborative work we, as a regional party—with a virtuous relationship with President Giani —have accomplished in these challenging months has been rewarded, producing important results like today's and those we hope will be achieved at the vote."
