Spoofing: 43 million calls blocked since August 19

First results of the measures anti-spoofing measures introduced on August 19th thanks to the Regulation Agcom. The phenomenon consists in manipulation of the information that carries the identity of the caller (the so-called Cli) to prevent their identification and recallability (the user sees a number that does not corresponds to who actually originated the call). it is a practice prohibited by law and regulation Italian. Blocking telephone calls from abroad with fixed network Cli, based on partial reports so far transmitted by the operators involved, relating to a period of time in some cases very limited, has led to filtering of approximately 43 million calls: 1.3 million calls of spoofing per day. "A considerable figure - underlines Agcom in a note - which represents, in the whole period, 5.74% of the total calls received by Italians. In the initial period, the rate of spoofing has even reached thresholds of 60%". It has been observed, in first, a structural reduction in spoofing attempts starting from the date of implementation of the blockade. The analysis aggregate data also highlighted a variability weekly traffic. Total call volumes, and as a consequence, even those with blocked calls suffer a drastic reduction during the weekends. This fluctuation appears consistent with normal traffic patterns, which see a reduction in commercial and telemarketing activities, often at the origin of fraudulent calls, during the days non-working. An even more marked decline is recorded during the summer holiday period, especially in the week of As regards the comparison between the different operators, since the measure adopted is identical, the different number of blocks appears to depend on the composition of the incoming traffic at each operator. Given that the measures adopted are proving to be an effective tool for filtering at the border of the national network, will be at every the analysis of the subsequent periods is significant, starting from from September, as the data for August could be affected by changes due to holidays, similarly to what was found for the reduction of the phenomenon on weekends. The phenomenon of spoofing is currently in a large part of which is attributable to calls from abroad. The most likely evolution is a shift towards mobile CLIs Italians or towards international CLIs from third countries.
