Claudia Sheinbaum hopes to reach an agreement with Donald Trump on tariffs on Mexico: “We are in a position to do so”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is confident that she will reach an agreement with her US counterpart, Donald Trump , over his threat to impose tariffs on Mexico; “we are in a position to do so,” the federal leader said.
Today, Monday, February 24, during her morning press conference at the National Palace, Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned about the public health crisis in the United States due to fentanyl addiction , a fact that Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico by accusing that the flow of the drug comes from the border between the two countries.
In this regard, Claudia Sheinbaum questioned the argument that fentanyl only enters the United States from Mexico and Canada , which is why she reiterated the Mexican Government's discourse of collaboration to help in the humanitarian crisis facing the United States.
“We are going to help the United States with this humanitarian crisis they are facing, but we also do not want fentanyl to go anywhere, we do not want drugs to go anywhere. Not only to the United States, but to young Mexicans or from any country in the world. And in that we have to collaborate and coordinate.”

Claudia Sheinbaum spoke of the possibility of an agreement with Donald Trump regarding the threat of imposing tariffs on Mexico, after the president of the United States gave a one-month deadline to reduce migration rates and the flow of fentanyl .
Before reaching that point, the president again recalled that there is a demand from fentanyl consumers in the United States and, in that sense, a distribution and sales network that has not been investigated , as has happened in the American media against the Mexican cartels:
“Where are the precursors coming from? Where is the manufacturing? How is it sold illegally? Because, where is the large consumption? In the United States. Who sells fentanyl in the United States? What are these cartels that sell fentanyl in the United States? Where is the money laundering of those resources? And that is where we are going to cooperate and coordinate, precisely because we do not want this to exist.”

Claudia Sheinbaum also highlighted the role of the Mexican government in reducing the rates of violence in the country, and in this way also combating drug trafficking to the United States; “but we have to do this analysis among the three countries,” she said.
“Looking at all the intelligence there is... Well, we are finding out where it comes from, where it comes in, where it is manufactured, how it is distributed. And that will give us a lot of information so that everyone in their country can act in a coordinated manner.”

That said, the Mexican president recalled that on Monday, March 3, the deadline established by President Donald Trump will be met, who threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on all imports from Mexico; “this Friday we would need to be reaching important agreements,” said Sheinbaum Pardo.
“If necessary, I will seek another phone call with President Trump; whatever it takes to reach an agreement.”

In that sense, he said that the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard , traveled to Washington DC to work on the possibility of an agreement .
"What we need is to close this agreement, and I believe we are in a position to do so."
