Evo Morales resigned from MAS, the party that led him to the Bolivian government for 14 years

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales (2006-2019) has resigned from the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) , the party he led for 27 years and with which he governed the country for 14 years, his former minister and ally, Teresa Morales, reported on Tuesday.
The former minister acknowledged that this decision marks a definitive break with the political organization that Evo Morales himself founded and with which he came to power. She emphasized that the decision responds to the internal dispute that has divided the militants and the loss of control of the party in the hands of sectors related to the current president of Bolivia, Luis Arce .

Morales' resignation occurs in a context of internal crisis, with the validation of Grover García as president of the organization by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), following a ruling by the Plurinational Constitutional Court. García, elected at a congress held in May 2024 in El Alto, represents the official faction led by Arce, which deepened the fracture in the party.
According to former minister Morales, around one million people are expected to leave the MAS , which would considerably weaken the party's structure. "Evo Morales does not hold any public office and yesterday (Monday), through a delegate, he sent his resignation from the MAS-IPSP," the former member of the Aymara leader's Cabinet told reporters.

Evo Morales seeks to participate in the next presidential electionsThe former president announced last Thursday his candidacy for the presidential elections of August 17 of this year, together with the party - in Argentina, suggestive - of Frente Para la Victoria (FPV), with which he sealed a strategic alliance, despite the legal obstacle that his candidacy faces.
However, a ruling by the Plurinational Constitutional Court in December 2023 prohibits his participation in the elections , which was ratified by the TSE. Morales' decision to run under another acronym opens a new phase of political confrontation in Bolivia. His candidacy, although announced, remains uncertain due to the constitutional restrictions in force.
