On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 13 , José Alberto Mujica Cordano , former president of Uruguay, better known as Pepe Mujica, passed away at the age of 89. Following the news of his death, various Latin American figures expressed their feelings regarding the emotional news.

Politicians from around the world bid farewell to Mujica

The current president of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, announced Mujica's death on his personal X account. He thanked him for the love he showed to the Uruguayan people during his presidential term from 2010 to 2015. “ President , activist, reference and leader. We are going to miss you very much, dear old man, ” he wrote.

In the same post, among the comments, various politicians from around the world shared their thoughts in honor of Pepe Mujica . For example, Citlalli Hernández Mora, Secretary of Women in Mexico: “Pepe Mujica was a man who transcends and leaves a legacy. He is only gone physically. May he rest in peace.”

Likewise, President Claudia Sheinbaum honored the wisdom and thought that the Uruguayan president transmitted during his life: “Pepe Mujica, an example for Latin America and the entire world for the wisdom, thought, and simplicity that characterized him.”

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales expressed his gratitude for the advice and patriotic ideals the Uruguayan guerrilla championed throughout his life. This, despite José Mujica's criticism of Morales in a 2024 interview, where he expressed his disagreement with Morales's prolonged tenure in power.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of my brother Pepe Mujica. I always remember his advice, full of experience and wisdom. He was a fervent believer in integration and the Great Homeland. His teachings and his great example remain (...) Latin America is in mourning," Morales wrote.

For his part, Colombian President Gustavo Petro bid farewell to the man he considered his friend, and reiterated his desire for a united Latin America.

"Pepe Mujica, the great revolutionary, the president of Uruguay, has died. Farewell, friend . I hope that Latin America will one day have an anthem; I hope that South America will one day be called Amazonia. Today I firmly believe in the integration project of Latin America," he said.
