Trump designates the anti-fascist movement in the US as a terrorist organization.

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday the designation of the anti-fascist movement Antifa as a "major terrorist organization," calling it "a dangerous, sick, radical left-wing disaster."

Trump indicated on his Truth Social account that he will also recommend investigating those who fund Antifa "in accordance with the highest legal standards." The move comes after the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10.

The president, who is on an official visit to the United Kingdom, added that his decision seeks to protect citizens and stressed that any violent actions attributed to Antifa will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

In his post, the Republican did not make clear what mechanism Trump would use to make the designation, since Antifa is a highly decentralized network in the US that brings together activists who define themselves as anarchists, anti-capitalists, or communists and lacks a defined leadership, making it unclear who or what exactly would be the target.

The US president has repeatedly accused the network of inciting violence , including during the unrest following the 2020 death of George Floyd during his first term, and has expressed his desire to designate it as a terrorist group on multiple occasions, although experts and officials have stressed the legal difficulty of sanctioning such a decentralized group.

Since September 10, the day Kirk was assassinated in Utah, Trump has blamed the "radical left" for the political violence in the country in his public appearances.

Several employees of companies and universities in the United States have been fired or disciplined for comments deemed inappropriate about Kirk's murder. These include employees at Nasdaq, Perkins Coie, and a Texas State University student expelled for mimicking the murder during a vigil.

Republicans have attempted to sanction and remove from legislative sessions Democratic representatives who have been critical of the extremist activist's performance and comments during his online programs or during his activities in public spaces and universities, where he confronted young, liberal-minded students.
