USAID on the brink of extinction: Trump administration announces cuts of over 90% of its international cooperation

US cooperation with the world is virtually going to disappear. The government of US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the cuts in its international cooperation programs will be 92% and almost 60 billion dollars.
In a statement, the State Department said the figure was decided "at the conclusion of a process led by the leadership of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)" and with sections reviewed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio himself.
"Nearly 5,800 contracts with a remaining value of $54 billion were identified for elimination as part of the 'America First' agenda , representing a 92% reduction," he said.
In addition, 28% of subsidies worth $4.4 billion were also ordered to be cancelled.
The dismantling of USAID has been one of the priorities in the budget cuts of the Trump administration and of the technology magnate Elon Musk , who heads an office called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Some 2,000 USAID employees were laid off on Sunday and thousands more were placed on administrative leave.
On Wednesday night, the Supreme Court suspended a lower court deadline requiring the Trump administration to resume payments of some $2 billion in frozen foreign aid by midnight.
The order, announced by Chief Justice John Roberts, is temporary and gives the court time to resolve the matter.
